Masterclass: Creating Drama with Shadows with Peter Stein, ASC

Overview

This workshop, led by Peter Stein, ASC, will focus on creating drama with shadows. The class will begin with a brief review of the basic tenants of lighting, shooting, and how to create a sharp shadow. We will then use a moving camera to shoot a scene in which the shadow of a character is an intrinsic part of the action. The major crew positions will be filled by class participants and the students will rotate through various positions after each take. This includes operating the camera as well as being the AC, gaffer, electric grip, key grip and dolly grip. Students will be able to fill as many positions as time permits.

Following the shoot, we will screen and discuss the dailies. Participants who bring a hard drive will able to download the footage to their personal drives as the end of the class. This interactive workshop is a great way to learn in a hands-on environment that simulates an actual on set experience.

“I appreciated the hands on approach of this class. Having the ability to apply concepts in a realistic film crew setting is very invaluable. The class has given me added confidence when doing my personal projects.
I found ASC, Peter Stein to be an excellent teacher as he imparts his knowledge and experience. I think Ablecine has found a winning formula, and I look forward to attending future workshops.” -Johnny Joyner
