Alister Chapman: S-Log Demystified

For many people, Log is an entirely new concept, and to get the very best from Log recording you need to approach the way you expose differently. In this intensive, one-day workshop, participants will learn about Log and how to get the most from it by using simple exposure methods and post-production techniques.

As more cameras now shoot with extended dynamic ranges that exceed the recording capabilities of conventional gamma curves, the use of Log gamma is becoming commonplace even in low cost cameras. Cameras such as Sony’s new FS5, FS7, a7R II, and even the modest RX100 II, all have the ability to record S-Log2 or S-Log3 images. Although this workshop will focus on Sony cameras, it will also be relevant for users of Log in cameras from other manufacturers, as the general methods and techniques apply to all cameras with Log gamma.

This workshop is perfect for those new to Log or wishing to gain a deeper understanding of Log and gamma without going into too many of the deepest technicalities. The aim is to provide a solid understanding of the basics, along with a series of easy-to-use methods and techniques that will allow attendees to shoot well exposed Log easily and post-produce Log footage with great results.

During the workshop participants will learn not only how to work with Log but why they need to do things differently. By understanding the “why,” they will be able to adjust the techniques and methods shown to suit their own shooting style or different cameras.
