This in-depth, hands-on workshop teaches participants the skills need to operate Sony F5 / F55 cameras. Designed for working professionals, as well as those who are looking to enter the field, the course gives detailed instruction on camera set up, operation and workflows. By the end of the two-days, attendees will have gained comprehensive knowledge of the F5 / F55 and the confidence to operate the camera in a variety of production scenarios.
In this very practical class, participants will work in small groups to shoot test footage and gain familiarity with Sony F5 / F55 cameras. They will learn how to set up the camera and get the best look for each shot. AbelCine instructors who have real-world experience with Sony cameras teach the class.
Topics include including detailed instruction on camera operation, lens choice, production techniques, and aftermarket accessories. The similarities and differences between the two cameras will be discussed, as well as the AXS-R5 Raw Recorder, viewfinders, lenses and 4K monitors. Emphasis is on developing an understanding of the camera sensor, internal recording options, lens choice, and menu systems.

Ian McCausland is one of AbelCine’s Camera Technology Specialists and Trainers. He holds a BA in Film from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and his credits include the 1999 Black Sabbath concert video The Last Supper and the 2008 Smashing Pumpkins documentary If All Goes Wrong. As one of the original Abel staff members, Ian was integral to the formation of the company’s rental department in 1990. Jeff Lee joined the AbelCine team in 2009. Born and raised in New York City, Jeff Lee attended Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of Arts where he concentrated in both photography and filmmaking. In addition to his current role as Training Manager, Jeff is also leads specialized classes and workshops in AbelCine NY’s training center. He also serves as a Technical Editor on the AbelCine blog, CineTechnica. Additionally, Jeff is an accomplished still photographer who has traveled extensively working on documentary projects. Megan Donnelly is one of AbelCine’s Camera Technology Specialists. Originally from Mesa, Arizona, Megan graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.F.A. in Media Arts with a concentration in Cinematography. Prior to joining AbelCine, Megan was the Technical Manager at Fletcher Camera and Lenses / CineVerse in Chicago. She also developed the curriculum for the International Cinematographer’s Guild Digital Loader Workshops, which she taught nationwide.
