The Fundamentals of Cinematography and Lighting with Rick Siegel

You have an intriguing story that you plan to turn into an visually compelling film.  If you are going to collaborate with a Director of Photography or be your own Cinematographer, it is essential to understand the fundamentals.  This exclusive, hands-on class focuses on the organizing principles of cinematography and lighting.  Using your own story’s central themes we discuss camera set-ups, analyze lens choices and dissect several different lighting treatments in the course of this 6-hour intensive class.

Taught by Emmy Award winning and veteran DP Rick Siegel, this class utilizes the specific and controllable challenges of interview portraiture so you can focus on various camera situations that occur on any film – whether narrative, documentary or corporate.  By the end of class, you’ll be ready to light and frame your ideas into engaging cinematic portraits.

The first half of the class centers on the analysis of the critical visual factors – framing, lens and camera choice, talent considerations, production design and editorial.  The afternoon session is where each student works with the camera and lights directly and experiences multiple real-world situations to challenge them in their newfound knowledge.
