Understanding Color & Gamma

Overview

Color Science is an often discussed topic today and something that every modern cinematographer and editor should understand. This workshop goes into the theory and reality of color. The workshop covers how color and brightness are created both in our eyes and in the digital world. Topics include color space, color gamut, sub sampling, bit depth,  luminance, brightness, and gamma curves. To bring in more real world application, special attention is paid to the color systems and gamma modes used in the latest cameras.

Corey Christian joined the AbelCine team incorey 2016 as a Camera Technology Specialist based out of the NY office. When he isn’t behind a computer, he’s usually out testing gear or capturing new perspectives with his drone. Corey is an Avid Media Composer certified editor, and has previously taught Advanced Editing & Cinematography courses in NYC. Behind the camera, he has shot everything from lifestyle and non-profit stories, to destination weddings with his production company, Going Home Productions. Originally from Farmingville, NY, he attended Flagler College in Saint Augustine, FL, where he earned his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Media Production & Cinema and Media Studies. Geoff Smith joined AbelCine in 2015 as a Camerageoffsmith_bio Technology Specialist with a focus on workflows from capture to post-production. Geoff has a background in technology from web development to content management at companies like VMware, Lucasfilm and Silicon Graphics (SGI). Prior to joining AbelCine, he worked on an independent feature as a DIT and Assistant Editor. A passionate photographer, his editorial and fine art work has been published in newspapers and magazines, as well as exhibited in New York City and online. Originally from New York, Geoff graduated from California State University, Chico earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Design with an emphasis in Media Arts. Follow Geoff on Twitter: @geoffsmithphoto

Juliet McNally is one of AbelCine’s Digital Cinema Specialists. She earned her B.A. in Film at Emerson College in Boston, where she was nominated for Best Cinematographer and won a Best Advanced Film Evvy Award. She joined AbelCine’s Burbank office in 2005 as a rental assistant – one of only seven employees in the office at the time. During the company’s transition to a larger building, Juliet also transitioned into a new role as a Camera Technology Specialist.
